Beware devious undercover cops

Yesterday the British Guardian reported UK police offered money to recruit a member of the direct action environmental group Plane Stupid, as an informant.

The police can’t deny it in this case. The activist, Matilda ‘Tilly’ Gifford, recorded the police offer. Listen to it here.

Police intimidation of the climate movement in England is getting serious. We can expect more of the same here in Australia, as the climate movement grows and becomes more powerful.

Plane Stupid is campaigning against the expansion of London’s Heathrow airport and wants short-haul flights to be replaced by land travel. This is because aviation is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

They give ten good reasons “to ground the plane”.

In March, Plane Stupid member Leila Deen threw green custard over New Labour politician Peter Mandelson (pictured below) to protest the government’s pro-business climate policy.

This kind of individual direct action tactic might not fit my idea of effective mass action… but it certainly is funny.

Plane Stupid has put together a game where you can slime Mandelson again and again. Play Leila Deen: Custard Queen here.
